PHYSICAL TRAINING IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME

By Keri-Sue Lewis - for the Hudson Valley Sampler

Jane Hamann wants to help people in the area achieve physical fitness.  Hamann is an in-home personal trainer who brings the necessary equipment to your door as well as convenience, flexibility and the personal attention you deserve.  Her workout routines vary for each individual and usually consist of aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises.  Her business, 3B Fitness Training, is based out of her home in Red Hook, NY.

Hamann is ACE-certified (American Council on Exercise) and has been a personal trainer for five years.  She is also a runner and has completed five marathons.  She works with each client individually to develop a plan based on his or her wants, needs, and goals.

Most of Hamann's clients meet with her two or three times a week, though some only have time to meet once. She encourages clients who cannot meet regularly to take initiative and exercise on their own when they can. She is available to her clients through phone and email, and asks that they don't hesitate to call and brag about their latest achievement or share their angst over their latest setback.  "I listen to people.  I don't just hear," she says of her relationship with clients. "They contribute as big a part of the program as I do, and I encourage feedback and progress reports from them. I enjoy educating my clients and motivating them."  Hamann has a flexible schedule and is willing to travel up to 25 miles.

Moderation and common sense are important to Hamann, who believes that modifications in diet and exercise can cause great results.  She says her goal is to, "help people to be healthy.  Just because you are thin does not mean you are necessarily fit.  Weight loss will come eventually, but you may not notice it right away. What you will notice is that you are carrying yourself better, your clothes fit better, you feel stronger, and you have more energy."

Many of Hamann's clients are people who have not exercised in a long time or have never exercised before.  She also works with senior citizens, people who are considering weight loss surgery, and people who just need that little extra help or push in the right direction.  She will also work with adolescents.  Hamann says there is no type of person she would not work with.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO FITNESS

By Jane Hamann

How many times have you seen a person on TV or in a magazine looking trim, fit and healthy and say to yourself, "I wish I looked like that." How many times in a week, or even a day, do you look at yourself and say, "I'm too fat" or "my hips are too big and my stomach sticks out" or "my legs and arms are flabby; I wish I were thin."

In today's society, we are obsessed with being thin, and we will do whatever it takes to become thin.  We are bombarded with magazine ads and TV commercials advertising the latest fad diet or exercise equipment that will bring amazing results in very little time. And only after futile attempts do we find out they really don't work, we are not thin and feel and sometimes look worse than we did before. The models you see in magazines and on TV may look thin and buff, but let's not forget the amazing work that can be done to a photo with a good computer program. Also, let's face it, who wouldn't look good with the best make-up, costuming and lighting.

Quite honestly, being healthy and fit is far more important than being thin. You may see a person in the store or walking down the street who is thin and trim and think, "That person must be really fit," but that might not be the case. A person can be thin and still be at risk for diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. A person may be thin and look good, but not feel good on the inside or feel disconnected or unfulfilled.

Being fit and healthy is having a balance of a strong body, sound mind and healthy spirit. Fitness and health is obtained by regular exercise, a healthy diet and spiritual well-being. Fitness does not have to involve hours at the gym hitting the weights and doing any number of aerobic activities. It is taking part in exercise you enjoy - and can and will do regularly. It is exercise that makes you feel and look good and makes you want to keep doing it. It is exercise appropriate for your lifestyle and your body type. There are some things you can't control, such as the body type you were born with.  If you accept the body you were born with and take part in activities that allow you to achieve the best body "you" can have instead of trying to achieve the impossible you will be much happier and healthier. Exercise should allow you to achieve an attainable and healthy weight, a physical state that is appropriate for you and your lifestyle. Ultimately, your goal should be good health.  If you can schedule a half-hour of exercise four to five times a week, you will be well on your way to a healthy body. As you become more physically fit, you will notice an increase in your energy level, a decrease in your stress level, a greater ability to complete daily tasks as well as weight loss.

But keep in mind, total fitness does not only include exercise and a healthy diet, it includes making time to participate in activities that make you feel more grounded, like a trip to an art gallery, and spending time with friends or reading good book. A person who exercises regularly, eats a healthy diet, gets enough sleep and stimulates the mind and soul with nurturing activities will be more fit, healthy and connected than the person who exercises every day but does not eat well, sleep enough or take time to nurture the mind and soul.

As Nicki Anderson, a Personal Trainer and owner of Reality Fitness in Naperville, IL states "If all you do is physical exercise and never do things to calm the spirit and fuel the mind, you'll feel incomplete. The marriage of exercise to other pleasurable activities is what brings true fitness."

If you look in the dictionary, fit or fitness is defined as to be suitable or appropriate for a particular figure, space, etc. Find those activities that "fit" you both physically and mentally and you will be the person other people will be saying, "Wow, I wish I were like her."
